Once upon a time at Punch…

Last week our Leeds digital agency took part in National Storytelling Week. We brought in some of our favourite stories and discussed why we love them so much.

Storytelling is about more than just reading books, it’s about communication, learning and in many cultures passing down traditions from one generation to the next. That’s why many of us discussed books we either read as a child or read to our own children now. In an industry like ours, that is predominantly technology-driven, we believe it is really important to remember the values and traditions that are handed down through telling stories.

Here is what the some of the Punch bunch said about their favourite stories…

Sophie – Marketing Executive

What story have you brought?
‘Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and Other Lies’

What is it about?
This book is full of amazing women exploring what the F-Word means to them in short stories.

What is it about the story that you love?
As a young woman, I feel it’s my duty to educate myself on feminism, it’s really opened my eyes to different perceptions of feminism. It is such an empowering read.

Rich- Director

What story have you brought in?
‘Hill of the Red Fox’

What is it about?
Steam trains, espionage and adventure

What is it about the story that you love?
It was my dad’s book and he would read it to me as a child. I love the old-fashioned narrative – its like listening to a scratchy old record and is a nice step outside of the modern world. I have read it countless times and it now sits at the side of the bed waiting to be read to my children.

Will – Creative Artworker

What story have you brought?
‘Rabbit, Run’

What is it about?
You’ve heard the story before, a man trapped in a loveless marriage, boring sales job, and attempts to escape the realities of life.

What is it about the story that you love?
John Updike works his magic and creates a fantastic page-turner from a somewhat ordinary tale. American fiction at its finest.

Julie – Senior Designer

What story have you brought?
‘Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls’

What is it about?
It is jam-packed with the life stories of some of the world’s most inspirational women, from Ada Lovelace to Coco Channel and Michelle Obama!

What is it about the story that you love?
It is a truly heart-warming book! I bought this book to read to my baby and every time I did I would I’d feel her kicking. I still read it to my daughter now, she is just one year old, but she loves it. I hope to show her that as a woman she has the potential to be anything she sets her mind to!
